I hope everyone is enjoying
their Labor Day holiday. It was great to see a win for our Buckeyes this past
Saturday. Unlike TSUN, we were able to handle our I-AA opponent in check. It
goes to show you that if you' are not prepared, you can be beat on any given
Saturday. Just because it was YSU, don't think we need to just put on our
jerseys and go out and think we're going to win. It doesn't work like that.
That's why teams practice day in and day out for their opponent.
What an excellent
turnout for the first game of 2007!! We had 75+ @ Gills and another 40+ up in
A few thoughts on the
game. First, it looks like "Beanie" Wells is still slowed by an ankle
injury that he first suffered in the spring. He re-aggravated it in fall camp
and he didn't look that impressive against a weak YSU defense. I blame the
O-Line for not dominating upfront to spring Wells and others to gain yardage
when they needed to. Too many false starts and 12 men in the huddle penalties
really ruined our rhythm. It could have been a lot worse than 38-6. Ben
Person's holding call on Brandon Saine's TD run was pathetic. Saine had a
fantastic run that would have given him 60+ yds. on the day. Saine looks like
the real deal. His speed is comparable to TGII.
Eight true freshmen saw
playing time Saturday. Two of them caught my eye in Dane Sanzenbacher and
Taurian Washington. Both WR had TD catches on their first career catch. Sanzenbacher's
was a pretty 3 yd. TD slant pass in the back of the end zone. I believe both of
these young men will make a contribution this season. Hopefully, Ray Small will
play this week. If not, the Bucks will have plenty of weapons in their arsenal.
I also liked the combo
of Todd Boeckman and Brian Robiskie. Boeckman is truly a pocket passer that
puts great touch on the ball. Robiskie, who had a career best 9 catches for 153
yards, will give defenses fits with his size, speed and ability. I'm eager to see
if he can put up numbers like that on a weekly basis.
Finally, the Bucks did
lose starting LE Lawrence Wilson for 6-8 weeks with a broken leg. Wilson, who
was expected to be a major force on the D-Line, could take a medical redshirt
if Tressel decides to keep his eligibility at 2 years. Now, sophomore
Robert Rose and true frosh Cameron Heyward will have to fill in on an already
thin line that can't afford any more injuries. That's one area that we were
hurting (more than any other position on the field).

Sticker of the Game: QB Todd Boeckman: 17-23, 225 yds. 2 TD, 0 INT.
