SCHEDULE MATTERS

In the wake of the "Catastrophe in the Coliseum," it would be easy to point fingers at all the people who did not perform up to the level we expect.  I'm going to resist that temptation.  After all, it's not all about the players and coaches.  It's also about a philosophy.  Scheduling philosophy to be specific.

Quick, what conference do the Youngstown State Penguins play in?  Answer: Missouri Valley.  What is the combined record of our first two opponents of the season?  Answer: 1-5.  You get the point.  We're expecting our Buckeyes to prepare for epic battles like the one we tried to wage against USC by feeding on cupcakes first.

It's a formula that isn't working.  And we are destined to repeat it again in the coming years.  A look at future schedules includes such stalwarts as Toledo (twice), Ohio (again), Eastern Michigan and Akron.  Where is the good regional competition like West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Missouri and similar programs?

We are told that our scheduling philosophy is driven by the need to have at least 7 home games a year.  The success of the football team supports a number of other programs, including donations to the library renovation, and we need the money.  It is a tough dilemma; I don't have the answer.  But I know we have an athletic department filled with competent administrators who need to figure this one out.

And soon.  The best athletes look forward to playing the best competition.  They strive to get better and better at their craft in hopes of making it to play on Sundays.  One key non conference game per year like USC simply isn't enough.

Now we prepare for our next date with the Trojans.....of course, it's the Troy Trojans this time around.

GO BUCKS.  YEA OHIO.
